Everyone here smokes. I mean everyone. The American tobacco companies are alive and well living here in Italy.
We're in a very hilly area and this Sunday morning the church bells have been ringing all morning. They echo through the hills and produce a wonderful sound.
This may be the best place on earth to grow food, With its climate and rich volcanic soil.
Food grows out of every crack in the rock. Rosemary, basil, sage grow wild and perfume the air. The air is actually sweet here. Fig trees grow out of cracks in stone walls. Almost every plant here produces food. I like the effort of "urban harvest" in Houston to plant more food producing trees and plants. Italy has a 4000 year head start on us.
We have been drink wine here nonstop. No one has been drunk or has had a head ache. We had a vineyard tour yesterday and they explained that the reason is the vineyards here do not add artificial ingredients and sulfites. The wines here contain trace amounts of sulfites but they are natural coming from the soil and the barrels. To lengthen shelf life, American vineyards add artificial sulfites.
Today we drive to Pisa to see the leaning tower. It's been on my bucket list since I was in the third grade and learned about it. I can still remember the photo of it in my text book.
